Divided Together Upon Disbelief
Allah عزوجل says in The Qur’an;
“Of a truth ye are stronger (than they) because of the terror in their hearts, (sent) by Allah. This is because they are men devoid of understanding. They will not fight you (even) together, except in fortified townships, or from behind walls. Strong is their fighting (spirit) amongst themselves: though wouldst think they are united, but their hearts are divided: that is because they are a people devoid of wisdom.”
Surah Al-Hashr, 59:13-14
Ibn Kathir رحيم الله says about these ayah:
Allah states that the hypocrites, `Abdullah bin Ubayy and his like, sent a messenger to Bani An-Nadir promising them help. Allah the Exalted said,
(Have you not observed the hypocrites who say to their friends among the People of the Scripture who disbelieve: “If you are expelled, we indeed will go out with you, and we shall never obey anyone against you; and if you are attacked, we shall indeed help you.”) Allah then said,
(But Allah is Witness that they verily are liars.) meaning, the hypocrites lied when they issued this promise, because it was just words that they did not intend to fulfill. Also, what they said they would do, would never have been fulfilled by them, and this is why Allah said,
(and if they are attacked, they will never help them.) meaning, the hypocrites will not fight along with the Jews,
(And (even) if they do help them, ) and even if the hypocrites did fight along their side,
(they will turn their backs, and they will not be victorious.) This Ayah contains good news, just as the good news that this following Ayah conveys,
(Verily, you are more fearful in their breasts than Allah.) meaning, the hypocrites fear you more than they fear Allah, as He says;
(Behold! a section of them fear men as they fear Allah or even more.)(4:77) This is why Allah said,
(That is because they are a people who comprehend not.) Allah then said,
(They fight not against you even together, except in fortified townships, or from behind walls.) meaning, they will not fight Muslims except from behind besieged fortified forts, because of their cowardice and fear of Muslims. They only fight when they have to defend themselves (even though they threaten Muslims of reprisals). Allah the Exalted said,
(Their enmity among themselves is very great.) meaning, the enmity they feel against each other is intense,
(And make you to taste the violence of one another.)(6:65) Allah said in the Ayah,
(You would think they were united, but their hearts are divided.) meaning, even though one might see them combining forces and think that these forces are harmonious, yet in reality, they are divided severely. Ibrahim An-Nakha`i said that this Ayah refers to the hypocrites and the People of the Scriptures,
(That is because they are a people who understand not.) Allah said,
(They are like their immediate predecessors; they tasted the evil result of their conduct, and for them a painful torment.) referring to the Jewish tribe of Bani Qaynuqa
, according to IbnAbbas, Qatadah and Muhammad bin Ishaq.
Tafsir Ibn Kathir
One should not look at those who are misguided (the hypocrites and unbelievers) and wish for the material things they have (i.e. wealth, children, spouses etc.). For indeed they are not on the clear Path to Allah and all other paths contain the evil of darkness.
How can two souls coexist in peace whilst they are in opposition to Allah
Those who disbelieve will always be filled with fear, suspicions, contempt, rage, resentment, jealousy and the like. This is due to the darkness of disbelief that has shielded them from seeing their own goodness and so, they cannot possibly see it in another. In fact, these persons will feel more inclined to those who are upon what they are upon of misguidance.
Together the two will destroy each other due to the lack of good manners, understanding the purpose for their creation, a firm criteria between right and wrong, knowledge and fear of The Day of Judgement, personal accountability for deeds, and other such blessings that Islam provides.
This destruction will undoubtedly happen in this life and the next unless Allah عزوجل bestows His Grace and saves one or both from by guiding them to the Straight Path.
We thank Allah عزوجل for His Mercy that encompasses us all and is open for the repentant and humble slaves, Alhamdullilah.
Allah عزوجل says in The Qur’an;
“And let not their wealth or their children amaze you. Allah’s Plan is to punish them with these things in this world, and that their souls shall depart (die) while they are disbelievers.”
Surah At-Taubah, 9:85
“And be not like those who forgot Allah; and He made them forget their own souls! Such are the rebellious transgressors!”
Surah Al-Hashr, 59:19
“And We did not create the heaven and the earth and that between them aimlessly. That is the assumption of those who disbelieve, so woe to those who disbelieve from the Fire.”
Surah Sad, Ayah 27
Ibn Taymiyyah رحيم الله said; when people help each other in sin and transgression they finish by hating each other.
Ibn al Qayyim رحيم الله said: “Uthman ibn Affan may Allah be pleased with him said: No one ever performs and action except that Allah the Exalted adorns him with a garment of his action. If it is good then the garment is good, if it is evil then the garment is evil.”
This is an affair known by the people of knowledge and insight, such that a good fragrance will emit from a good pious person even if he does not put on perfume. A good fragrance will emit from his soul onto his body and his clothes. As for the evil person the opposite is true. But the sick individual whose heart is filled with disease will not smell the scent from either individual; the pious or sinful.”
May Allah عزوجل grant us spouses and offspring who will be the comfort of our eyes and make us leaders of the Muhsinoon. Ameen.
