7:2

The Baptism of Allah

“(This is a) Book (the Qur’an) sent down to you (O Muhammad ﷺ), so let not your breast be narrow therefrom, that you warn thereby; and a reminder to the believers.”

(Surah Al-A’raf, 7:2)

Excerpts from Tafsir As-Sa’di about this ayah:

Here Allah عزوجل says to His Prophet سلى الله علىه و سلم, highlighting to him the greatness of the Qur’an: {“This is a Book that has been sent down to you”} that is, a great Book that contains all that people need, all divine injunctions and all aims and goals of Sharia, in a precise and detailed manner.

{“So do not let your heart be troubled by it”} that is, do not let there be any anxiety, doubt or confusion in your heart; rather you should understand that it has been sent down by One Who is Most Wise, Worthy of all praise.

“No falsehood can approach it from before it or from behind it”}; [it is] a revelation from One Who is Most Wise, Praiseworthy, (Fussilat 41: 42) and He is indeed the most truthful in speech. So let your heart be open to it and let your mind be at rest; convey its commands and prohibitions, and do not fear any blame or opposition.

{“So that you may warn”)} the people thereby and admonish and remind them; thus proof will be established against the stubborn, and remind the believers, as Allah عزوجل says elsewhere:
“{But continue to exhort them, for exhortation benefits the believers.”}
(adh-Dhariyat 51: 55) Thus they will remember the straight path and righteous deeds,
both outward and inward, and be alert to that which prevents a person from following that path.

(Tafsir As-Sa’di, Vol. 3, pg. 202-203)

Guidance is a Mercy from Allah عزوجل , and He chooses to give it to whomever He wills. Allah says in The Qur’an;

“Or [the state of a disbeliever] is like the darkness in a vast deep sea, overwhelmed with waves topped by waves, topped by dark clouds, (layers of) darkness upon darkness: if a man stretches out his hand, he can hardly see it! And he for whom Allah has not appointed light, for him there is no light.”

(Surah An-Nur, 24:40)

Those who have been called to Islam have been given a book [A Qur’an] containing light, a light by which they can see in this world. This book has come to clear confusion, wash away the stains of sins and disbelief, and to cure the ailments of the heart. Due to its absolute truth and Allah’s عزوجل complete perfection, it cannot harm those who believe. Receiving such a gift (The Qu’ran) should result in one showing eternal gratitude by following (strictly) what has been given (of guidance).

The admonitions and prohibitions contained in the Qur’an hit the heart of the guilty, among the believers and disbelievers. The believers should rejoice when they are corrected by repenting and mending their conduct so that they can rise in station.

Those who truly seek to please Allah عزوجل must not fall into despair when the guidance reaches them. The Qur’an is a light that will make the evil within the soul manifest. Allah عزوجل does not do this to harm His slaves for He is Al-Barr (The Most Benin and Kind), and Al-Lateef (The Subtle and Kind). How might the slave reach wisdom if he/she isn’t shown the evil of their conduct so that they may abandon that path and seek a path with Allah عزوجل and His Messenger سلى الله علىه و سلم?

Allah says in The Qur’an;

“So loose not hope nor fall into despair, for you must gain mastery if you are true in Faith.”

(Surah Al ‘Imran, 3:139)

On the authority of Abu Dharr al-Ghifaree (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) from his Lord, that He said:O My servants! I have forbidden dhulm (oppression) for Myself, and I have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another. O My servants, all of you are astray except those whom I have guided, so seek guidance from Me and I shall guide you. O My servants, all of you are hungry except those whom I have fed, so seek food from Me and I shall feed you. O My servants, all of you are naked except those whom I have clothed, so seek clothing from Me and I shall clothe you. O My servants, you commit sins by day and by night, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness from Me and I shall forgive you. O My servants, you will not attain harming Me so as to harm Me, and you will not attain benefiting Me so as to benefit Me. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all as pious as the most pious heart of any individual amongst you, then this would not increase My Kingdom an iota. O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all as wicked as the most wicked heart of any individual amongst you, then this would not decrease My Kingdom an iota . O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, and the humans of you and the jinn of you, were all to stand together in one place and ask of Me, and I were to give everyone what he requested, then that would not decrease what I Possess, except what is decreased of the ocean when a needle is dipped into it. O My servants, it is but your deeds that I account for you, and then recompense you for. So he who finds good, let him praise Allah, [Muslim]

Those on earth during this time are now dealing with Corona Virus (a pandemic). The night clubs, alcohol stores, and means of making profit from interest are coming to a hault. Muslims who were mocked for adhering to their religion are now being imitated. Non-muslims have abandoned shaking hands, are wearing face masks, washing themselves multiple times a day, and many appear to be more spiritually engaged, Allahu Alim.

Allah says in The Qur’an;

“And how many a sign in the heavens and the earth they pass by, while they are adverse therefrom.”

(Surah Yusuf, 12:105)

Many people reject the words of Allah عزوجل , not because they deny it is the truth, but because they perceive conforming their lives to the truth (Islam) is too heavy a feat. This is why Allah عزوجلhas reminded His Prophet سلى الله علىه و سلم that The Qur’an was not revealed be a cause of grief. In fact it is the opposite! If one submits him/herself to the guidance, Allah عزوجل has made a promise that is binding upon Himself to fulfill;

“Allah has promised those among you who believe and do righteous good deeds, that He will certainly grant them succession (to the present rulers) in the land, as He granted it to those before them, and that He will grant them the authority to practice their religion which He has chosen for them (i.e. Islam). And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their fear (provided) they (believers) worship Me and do not associate anything (in worship) with Me. But whoever disbelieves after this, they are the Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).”

(Surah An-Nur, 24:55)

During this present time and at all times, the Muslim must renew His/her intentions, seek to draw close to Allah through prayer, duaa, fasting, seeking knowledge, and other righteous deeds. They must also repent and seek to mend their conduct according to the best of what has been revealed.

The non-Muslim must ask Allah to guide them and to open their hearts to the truth.

Both parties-the Muslim and non-Muslim must submit wholeheartedly to the guidance of Allah عزوجل without any fear, anxiety, or doubts in their heart. Allah عزوجلhas promised that He will give them strength and establish their ability to practice their religion. Allah عزوجل says in The Qur’an;

“(Our religion is) the Baptism of Allah: and who can baptize better than Allah? And it is He whom we worship.”

(Surah Al-Baqara, 2:138)

May Allah make us successful. Ameen.
